Van-Lang Vietnamese School (VLVS) is a non-profit organization, which grew out of the concerns of Vietnamese parents, and community who wanted to insure the preservation of the Vietnamese cultural and linguistic heritage. The school was started in 1990 and is going strong with over 600 students in the 2008-2009 school year. Our Board Members and teaching staff are all volunteering their time without pay.

Our Mission

  1. Preservation of the Vietnamese culture and language
  2. Instilling a sense of cultural values and pride into our young people.
  3. Provide a healthy environment where children can interact with others with the same values.
  4. Promote parental involvement in schooling
  5. Provide activities (cultural events, camping, etc) as a way to learn team building and skill building
  6. Provide academic support for students via tutoring or scholarships

Our Organization

Our staff of volunteers includes 50 teachers, 30 board members and officers in charge of operations. Our volunteers are from all walks of life: homemakers, professionals, business owners, etc… Everyone on the staff is not compensated.

Our Program

We teach young students how to read, how to write, and how to speak Vietnamese. We also teach them about Vietnamese cultural and family values. We currently have 18 classes being held at the Portland Community College South East center. There are classes from level 1 thru 9. Classes are held for 2 1/2 hours every Sunday during the normal school year from September to June. As beginning of 2008, we have over 600 students enrolled. That would be almost 11% higher than last year.
